Essendon Football Club 2017

The Essendon Football Club was formed in 1872 and joined the VFL in 1897 as a foundation club of the league. Nicknamed the 'Bombers' they play their home matches at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and wear club colours of red and black.

Essendon has won a record 16 premierships (along with Carlton Football Club) and they have built a strong, powerful club with a very loyal fan base who support their team through the good times and the bad.

The legendary Kevin Sheedy coached Essendon for 27 consecutive years until leaving the club in 2007 when Matthew Knights took over the reins. Knights was replaced by club legend James Hird for the start of the 2011 AFL season and that change culminated in one of the darkest times for the club, due to the drugs scandal issue.

Former Eagle coach John Worshold took over the Bomber reins in 2016 and has the responsibility of leading the Bombers out of the darkness and into the light.

Essendon 2016 Season

Many expected a year of doom and gloom for the Bombers after 12-month anti-doping bans were placed on a dozen senior players, but they resurrected themselves on the field in a positive manner under new coach John Worsfold.

Darcy Parish, Aaron Francis, Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti and Michael Hartley were all shining lights, while emerging youngster Zach Merrett had an outstanding year. Merrett dominated in club disposals with 349 kicks and 308 handballs, amssing a total of 657 possessions.

Joe Daniher led the goal kicking with 43 for the year, and along with Merrett, these two young guns are going to play an important part in Essendon's immediate future.

The return of banned stars such as Dyson Heppell, Michael Hurley and Jobe Watson will certainly improve the side immensely and better things are ahead for the Bombers.

Emerging midfielder Zach Merrett won the Crichton Medal at Essendon with 456 votes, defeating Joe Daniher on 402 votes. In third place was former Cat James Kelly on 273 votes.
