The Gold Coast Football Club was established in 2009 and was the first AFL club to be based on the Gold Coast. Nicknamed The Suns, the new Gold Coast team joined the Australian Football League (AFL) for the first time in season 2011 to become the 17th club in the AFL competition.
The Gold Coast Suns played in the pre-season NAB Cup competition in February 2011 before playing their first AFL game for premiership points against Carlton in Round 2 of the season proper in April 2011 at the Gabba in Brisbane.
Gold Coast Suns in 2011
Major Suns signing Gary Ablett had a super first season as captain, while Nathan Bock, Jared Breennan and Michael Rischitelli also performed extremely well for the new kids on the block. Some exciting new talent emerged in the shape of ruckman Zac Smith and midfielder David Swallow to give the Suns plenty of hope moving forward in the AFL.
The Gold Coast Suns won three games in their debut season and there was much to like about the way they played the game. Exciting times ahead for the Gold Coast team.
