Sydney Spring Racing Carnival

The Sydney Spring Racing Carnival takes place between August and September each year at Randwick, Rosehill and Warwick Farm race tracks in Sydney.

The carnival finishes about a week before the running of the Caulfield Guineas at Caulfield in Melbourne, which is only a few weeks before Australia's most famous race, the Melbourne Cup, is held on the first Tuesday in November. The Sydney carnival is not as big and spectacular as the Melbourne equivalent but it does have some quality Group 1 races such as the Epsom Handicap and George Main Stakes.

The weight-for-age Group 3 Missile Stakes at Rosehill Gardens racecourse kicks off the stakes racing season and in late August the $1Million Group One Tea Rose Stakes is a highlight of the early spring at Rosehill racecourse. A number of Listed and Group 2 & 3 races are held between August and mid September before the spotlight turns to Randwick for George Main Stakes day and Epsom Handicap day for two days of fine racing action to end proceedings.

The George Main Stakes is a renowned Group 1 weight-for-age race over 1600 metres and usually attracts very good horses, while the Epsom Handicap is one of the toughest mile handicap events on the racing calendar each year. The final day at Royal Randwick is a ten event card with all group and listed races, including four Group One events, the Epsom Handicap and The Metropolitan for open horses, and the Flight Stakes and Spring Champion Stakes for three-year-olds.
