The Underwood Stakes is worth over $350,000 and was won in 2009 by the Mick Price trained Heart Of Dreams. The race is a good lead up race to the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington and has been won by some quality types including Elvstroem, Mummify, Northerly, Octagonal, Jeune and Bonecrusher.

The Underwood is one of two Group 1 races held on the same day, along with the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes. These two races are the first Group One events of the new racing season.
